Residents and officials in Atlantic Beach agree that there's a need for a central sewer system. They can't agree on the impact of building one.
One Atlantic Beach resident who owns a marina says he and other longtime residents like the ambience of a beach with small houses and small family-owned motels rather than high-rise condominiums and ritzy hotel chains. They think a new sewer system will spark development.
Opponents of the sewer project have recruited a slate of candidates to run in the town election in October on a platform of defeating the current Town Council and mayor as well as the sewer project.
Town Council member Jim Bailey says the town is only studying the sewer project and will make a final decision after considering all factors, including the cost. He saus using the lack of sewer to control growth is not the way to go.
