Navy Declares Missing Aviators Dead Off North Carolina Coast

The Navy stopped searching Friday for three people aboard a twin-engine radar plane that crashed off North Carolina's coast and declared the aviators dead.

A spokesman with the Norfolk-based Atlantic Fleet Naval Air Force says search crews found debris from the E-2C Hawkeye turbo
prop plane but no bodies.

The Navy did not release the names of the dead.

The plane had been missing since Wednesday night, when it had launched from the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman and crashed
into the Atlantic Ocean.

The plane was doing carrier qualification exercises, which involves taking off and landing on a carrier deck.
