Hundreds of students moved into East Carolina University in Greenville Thursday as the school announced new measures to keep students safe.
The changes were prompted by the tragic events at Virginia Tech. ECU has implemented a new text messaging and emailing system for students, family members and staff. The system is designed to alert students and their families of severe weather or an act of violence on campus.
The text messaging and emailing systems are free for students, faculty and family members. ECU says nearly 2,200 freshman, family and community members have already registered.
