Powerful Earthquake Hits Peru

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says a tsunami has been generated by a strong earthquake that hit Peru.

While the tsunami itself was small, the earthquake was a powerful 7.9 on the Richter scale. At least 17 people are reported dead.

The quake shook Peru's coast near the capital, toppling some houses and causing alarmed residents to flee into the street for safety.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake hit about 90 miles southeast of Lima at a depth of 25 miles. It was followed by four strong aftershocks that registered between magnitude 5.4 and 5.9.
