The Onslow County School district plans to build 5 new schools in 10 years with a new $145 million capital improvement plan. Dixon Middle School is the first on the list, and Tuesday students shared their ideas for the new building.
The new midle school will be built on 40 acres off Highway 210 in the Sneads Ferry area at Ridgeland Avenue. For 88 years the school has been serving students in Onslow County in a building off Highway 17 at Highway 210. There is obvious wear and tear on the building which needs frequent repairs.
Eighth graders shared their ideas with architects from Raleigh Tuesday on what they think future middle schoolers will want. They suggested more green space where students ecan eat lunch outside, a bigger and better gym, green technology and security features like new locks requiring a fingerprint or code and bullet proof glass. The students say they feel good about having a part in the planning, eve though they will not reap the benefits firsthand.
"I can make everybody else's middle school experience better than this one with the new school and new programs," said George Murphy.
Smith Sinnett Architecture plans to have its first designs ready for the school board in about 8 weeks
The Onslow County School's capital reserve fund will provide the initial investment of 13-million dollars. An incremental property tax increase will help fund the rest.
