Highway officials say the catwalk on the ocean side of the Herbert Bonner Bridge over Oregon Inlet will close starting today for replacement of fencing.
The catwalk is a popular fishing and sightseeing spot on the Outer Banks bridge that links the mainland to Hatteras Island.
Transportation Department engineer John Abel Junior says the $45,000 fence replacement project will include catwalks on both sides of the bridge. Concrete will be repaired and 1,000 feet of steel fence will be replaced with aluminum.
Fishermen still can use the catwalk on the west side of the bridge while the east side is repaired.
Abel says the old fence has been cut in places by fishermen who want to reach the pilings under the bridge. A Virginia man slipped
off a piling last month and drowned.
