State transportation officials say an initial inspection shows the only bridge in North Carolina known to be similar in design to the collapsed bridge in Minnesota is safe.
The two-lane bridge in Gaston County near the Mecklenburg County
line carries state Highway 273 over a Duke Power canal.
Transportation Department spokesman Ernie Seneca says inspectors
found some mud and debris that should be cleaned to prevent
corrosion. Seneca says the visual inspection indicates the
bridge is in good shape.
Seneca says a more in-depth structural inspection is planned
next week under the bridge.
The structure is smaller than the eight-lane bridge that
collapsed Wednesday into the Mississippi river in Minneapolis,
killing at least five people and injuring 79.
