Drought Closes Boat Ramps; City May Impose Mandatory Restrictions

Rocky Mount says if the city does not get significant rainfall within the next seven days mandatory water restrictions may be enacted.

The city has voluntarily asked residents to conserve water since July 4th.

Because of the low water levels on the Tar River Reservoir, police will close the main boat ramp on Bend of the River Road Friday morning. Picnic areas near the boat ramp will remain open and fishing from the riverbank will be okay.

Rocky Mount says the following week, police will close the Sapony Creek boat ramp on August 10th.

The city says low lake levels at the ramps could easily damage boats and trailers.
