One person is dead and five others are injured in a fiery accident involving a tractor-trailer on Interstate 40 near Raleigh-Durham International Airport.
The state Highway Patrol says the rig was heading westbound on
I-40 when it crossed the median and struck several vehicles in the
eastbound lane. Two vehicles -- a Nissan Altima and a Dodge Ram
pickup -- were pinned under the burning truck.
The accident occurred shortly before 1 p-m, bringing traffic to a standstill in both directions as firefighters tried to extinguish the flames.
A spokesman for Wake County Emergency Medical Services says one
person died. He says three people were critically injured and taken to area hospitals. Two others had minor injuries.
Christian Brill of the state Department of Transportation says it's expected that both directions of I-40 will be closed until "early evening."
