Supporters of a dog who survived being burned and beaten are using her abuse as a rallying cry for tougher animal cruelty laws in North Carolina.

The News & Record of Greensboro reported that supporters plan to go door-to-door Sunday in Guilford County with information about the state's laws on animal abuse. They blame those laws for letting the man who abused Susie receive what they think is a light sentence.

Earlier this month, a judge sentenced 21-year-old Lashawn Whitehead to probation for felony animal cruelty. He also received six to eight months in prison for setting personal property on fire. That personal property was Susie.

State Sen. Don Vaughan is amending a bill that deals with puppy mills to include stiffer penalties for felony animal cruelty.

Instead of a vet bill being $150 to have Fluffy spayed, maybe the state should issue vouchers for ALL pets, not just ones from shelters? Just a thought, trying to come up with a solution, because the solution we have obviously isn't enough. The mobile units are awesome, but they should be required to come to each county once a month. All 100 of them.

Jethro, who cares?? This isn't about Social Security...think of a creature more meek than yourself for a change.

The mobile spay/neuter unit from the vet school will not come here because it would take business away from the vet offices. It is not about population control it is about MONEY. If you see animal abuse call the animal shelter in Washington at 252-946-4517, it is paid for by all the tax payers in Beaufort County, including the tax payers of Belhaven.
