Companies Helped Pay Tab At Alcoholic Beverage Control Conference

Companies doing business with the Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission helped pay for a three-day agency conference that included premium drinks, golf and other perks.

The Charlotte Observer reports liquor brokers poured free drinks for at least 500 members of local A-B-C boards. L-B-and-B Associates gets liquor revenue from the boards to manage the state A-B-C warehouse. The company covered half the cost of a golf tournament.

Penn National Insurance offers insurance to local A-B-C boards.
The company paid for tournament prizes and printing the program.

Bob Phillips is executive director of the watchdog group Common
Cause North Carolina. He says it's a conflict of interest for public officials to accept gifts from companies trying to earn or keep their business.
