The Highway Patrol stopped traffic on U.S. 70 this morning, hoping to find who killed a man in last week’s hit and run.
Between 5:15 and 6:15 am, troopers made contact with hundreds of motorists who may have been driving through the area last Wednesday morning.
Killed was Bennie Williams, who was driving his motor scooter on the highway, one mile east of La Grange in Lenoir County. Troopers say a 1995 or 1996 Toyota Camry struck Williams from behind and kept going.
Troopers say during this morning’s traffic stop they didn’t learn anything new, but did confirm some previous information on what happened.
Troopers say the Camry should have damage to the driver’s side of its front end. They have recovered a broken headlight from the hit and run car, and have contacted area repair shops to be on the look out for the vehicle.
