A retired North Carolina orthodontist has given East Carolina University $4 million for its new dentistry school.

As thanks for his gift, university trustees voted on Friday to name the new building for the dentistry school after 84-year-old Dr. Ledyard E. Ross.

East Carolina University Chancellor Steve Ballard says the gift comes at a vital time. The new school will admit its first students in the fall of 2011.

University officials say the $4 million gift is one of the largest in the school's history.

We all thank u so much for ur generous gift, for we have a daughter goin to ECU and shes takin orthodonist as her major,so naturally we think its a more than generous gift, and we r so grateful for ur gift.Dont listen to the negative remarks for those ppl r just jealous that they r no more than uneducated ppl that dont know any better. Its really a shame that more ppl cant express love and show some compassion. All I can say is when these ppl come to c u as a Dr.,U guys really need to enforce alot of pain on these ppl who think that they r funny. Then we will c who gets the last laugh. If u ever get a patient named Dave just give him all the pain u can because he never has a kind word for anyone,he is quite the jokester and he needs a dose of his own medicine.Like someone else said,he is a lil boy in a grown mans clothes or he wouldnt think everyhing is a joke.God bless this man for he knows no better. For all of u guys in Dentistry,I am so happy for u all.U all have my utmost respect.

Think of all the people in astern NC who will be able to get more affordable dental care now by going to the Dental School. This dental school will be great for our area. I do think dental costs are way too high, however. Dental health is linked to medical health, yet many poor people have limited access to decent dental care because of extremely high costs. Dental insurance only covers half at best of costs and even that can be considerable. Why not give $4 million to start a free or reduced cost dental facility instead? Not criticizing or anything - I do think its a really great thing that he donated an incredible sum to a good cause.

It's great for Dr. Ross to give back to the area. Thanks!
