A panel of experts is looking to a cheap, at-home test kit as a way to increase the number of people who get screened for the nation's No. 2 cancer killer.

The specialists, convened by the National Institutes of Health, pointed to California health care giant Kaiser Permanente's program to track down those due for colon cancer screening and mail them the $20 kits that test stool for problems.

It's an alternative to the uncomfortable colonoscopy some hope will mean more people get screened for the disease. Everyone is supposed to get screened for colorectal cancer starting at age 50, but U.S. data shows just 55 percent do. But some five years after Kaiser's program began, its screening rates rose from just about 40 percent to 75 percent.

The NIH panel concluded that people should pick the screening option best for their own needs.

I agree with Porky 100%, my dad a check-up last summer and found out he had colon cancer! Thank goodness the doctors caught it in time! He had an operation, going through chemo, but is recovering! Get checked folks!!

I'm a victim.. er patron.. of Kaiser. :-P I'm sorry but I'm going thru a real run-around right now with my own health, and I can't say they've impressed me yet. You can't get them to hold to a set of diagnositic standards set forth by CAP, the ACR, or anything else that is supposed to be school of experts. I'd rather put the premium in savings for when it's needed but it's the "what if" of ever needing hospitalization.. although.... I'm not sure I want to be in a Kaiser hospital!

This will be a wonderful option for many people that don't have the money to get a regular exam. It will certainly give a little more peace of mind. Colon cancer is the number 2 killer and one of the most easy to detect and cure if caught early. Please get checked especially if you have others in your family that have had polyps or conditions related to cancer. Of course, a good diet with plenty of fiber helps too. Our eastern NC diet puts all of us at risk for diverticulitis! GET CHECKED!!
