The Red Cross has public shelters in several locations in Eastern Carolina, while several others have now closed.

In Lenoir County, a shelter opened at 4:00 p.m. at Lenoir Community College.
Anyone who goes to the shelter will need to bring comfort items and medicine.

The Red Cross opened an animal shelter at 4pm in the old maintenance building. No animals are allowed in with the public unless the animal is a service animal.

In Elizabeth City, a shelter at the Knobbs Creek Recreation Center on Ward Street closed at 4:00 p.m. Saturday.

In Nash County, two shelters opened late Friday have also closed. “We did not have residents at either of our shelter’s overnight. With many roads, especially secondary roads, still in an unsafe travel condition, it’s still best for people to shelter in place.” said Lynwood Roberson, Regional Executive with the Turnage Chapter of the American Red Cross.

I did not mean to insult any other organizations. I do not know very much about opening a shelter,as of yet I have not been involved (trained) in this aspect. I am a "newbie" volunteering for the Red Cross. I just know we don't get the credit we deserve, and the other people that works with or helps the Red Cross, in no matter what the situation is. THANKS TO EVERYONE!!!!!!!!! God bless you all (or y'all)

I will commend all involved in emergency management who are risking their lives to protect others, and the Red Cross will always be commended. Now is a time for unity and encouraging others who work hard to keep everyone safe. God be with us always.

Opening a shelter is a joint effort, DSS, Health Dept, Emergency Management, Schools and Red Cross. Red Cross provides the equipment needed, pays the bill and manages the shelters provides as many VOLUNTEERS as they have in the area. The state of NC requires DSS and Health Dept work in shelters. Shelters are a JOINT efforts of all the above and all should be thanked and supported for their efforts to provide for our community
