Farmers Nervous About Crop Conditions

Danny Clayton farms several thousand acres in Beaufort, Washington and Hyde Counties and tells us he's out tens of thousands of dollars in damage courtesy of the hard freeze that hit his wheat crop earlier this month. Clayton says while the recent dry spell hasn't damaged his corn crop yet, if things stay dry through the end of June into July, a critical time for growth, it could mean disaster come harvest time. He says when the agriculture industry suffers, it can have a trickle down effect to other industries. The leaves corn stalks are rolled up from the dry weather. Clayton says that's the crop's way of retaining moisture as soon as it rains the leaves will open up.
