Dry weather and soaring demand have prompted the Union County Board of Commissioners to impose mandatory water use rules that limit lawn watering and ban car washing at home.
The Union County rules limit lawn watering to two days a week, between dusk and dawn. Homes with odd-numbered addresses can water lawns on Tuesdays and Saturdays and even-numbered homes on Thursdays and Sundays.
Violators can be fined up to 500 dollars and could have their water service turned off.
In neighboring Mecklenburg County and Charlotte, water use hit a record on Memorial Day and officials say it was because to lawn watering. That utility is calling on customers to water lawns on week nights.
