Gas Prices Affecting Crabbers and Clammers

Starcke has been crabbing and clamming in the waters of Carteret County for more than twenty years, but now the three dollars a gallon he's shelling out for gas, is starting to take a big bite out of his bottom line. On an average work week, which for Starcke is seven to ten hour days, he nets about six hundred bucks, one hundred twenty five goes to gas on his truck and boat, and another hundred goes to bait, leaving him with a mere four hundred bucks a week. Starcke says, a big part of his gas expense goes to trips to New Bern he has to make at least three times a week, to drop his crabs off at the local fish market.
