Stephen Ryan Gibson of Raleigh underwent surgery this afternoon at Wake Medical Centerhospital after state and local officers shot him as he climbed out of a car involved in a high-speed chase on Interstate 40.
Authorities say the chase spanned four counties and ended on Raleigh's south side.
The state Highway Patrol says the chase began after a man driving a white Chrysler 300 robbed a B-P Station in Magnolia late this morning. A Duplin County sheriff's deputy pursued the suspect, and says the car at some point exceeded speeds of greater than 100 miles per hour.
Officers followed the car on westbound I-40. Stop sticks were thrown in Johnston County to stop the car. A third set of stop sticks deflated the tires.
The driver lost control of the car and caused a chain-reaction wreck involving two other cars.
Troopers say they saw the suspect moving between the front seat and back seat. He climbed out of the passenger side with his torso showing and displaying a weapon.
