Easley Says National Guard Could Handle Category 3 Hurricane

Although he's complained that the North Carolina National Guard is stretched too thin, Governor Easley says he's comfortable that the state could respond to a major hurricane strike.

But Easley reiterated today that the war on terror and in Iraq has left the National Guard without the time to train, or the resources it needs, to adequately respond to a multistate catastrophe. He again noted that about half of the guard's equipment is currently overseas.

Easley says state officials are comfortable with what they have, although they would like more equipment.

The governor also says that if anything stronger than a Category Three storm strikes the state, North Carolina would need to ask for help from its neighbors.
