Which Barbecue Is Best?

Folks from the west say their barbecue is best, but the people from the east think their pork is the beast.

In October, the two sides will bring their cole slaw and hush puppies to Raleigh to settle the score once and for all.

Organizers announced plans Monday for the Tar Heel Barbecue Classic in downtown Raleigh. The event should line both sides of newly opened Fayetteville Street and draw up to 75,000 people.

The festival will be held all day October sixth and seventh. It's the first massive gathering for Fayetteville Street since the pedestrian mall was torn out last summer and the street reopened to cars.

Organizers stress that eastern and western barbecue will be welcomed and judged for a $15,000 dollar cash prize.

Jim Early of the North Carolina Barbecue Society hopes the event will bring the barbecue rivalry to an end and help the state unite to compete against places like Texas, Kansas City and Memphis.
