Shock and disbelief: that's how family members of David Thomas, the Bertie County teen accused of shooting his mother, describe the tragedy that unfolded Monday.
The 17-year-old made his first court appearance Wednesday. Thomas is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. That charge comes after investigators say Thomas shot his mother in the back at close range with a shotgun.
Authorities say the two were arguing at the time, but will not disclose what the disagreement was about.
Now, Thomas faces an additional charge of attempted first-degree murder, which if convicted could carry a life sentence.
Family members describe Thomas as a smart teen that got along well with his mother.
Thomas's mother, Helen Pierce is recovering at Pitt County Memorial Hospital and according to family members, forgives David and wants him to get help.
Family members tell us up until this school year Thomas was home schooled. He attended Bethel Christian Academy this year.
