State Senate Okays 75 MPH Speed Limit Proposal

Legislation that allows transportation officials to raise the speed limit on some North Carolina roads to 75 miles per hour shows no signs of slowing down, at least in the Senate.

The full Senate gave overwhelming approval Thursday on a bill giving the state Department of Transportation authority to set speed limits that high for some interstates and other controlled access highways. The current limit is 70 mph. The bill was filed just last week and cleared a committee Wednesday.

The law already directs DOT to set a "reasonable and safe speed limit" on the basis of engineering and traffic levels. The bill doesn't say which roads should get the higher limit.

Sixteen other states authorize already speed limits of 75 mph or higher, but none on the East Coast.

The bill passed by a 45-1 vote and now goes to the House.

A legislative proposal to allow speed limits of 75 miles per hour on some North Carolina roads is barreling through the state Senate.

The Senate Transportation Committee quickly passed legislation Wednesday giving the state Department of Transportation authority to set speed limits that high for interstates and other controlled access highways. The current limit is 70 mph.

Bill sponsor Sen. Neal Hunt of Raleigh says he wants to give drivers the opportunity to travel more quickly in light traffic areas without getting a ticket. He envisions Interstate 40 between Raleigh and Wilmington as a candidate.

The bill was just filed last week and now heads to the full Senate.

AAA Carolinas motor club spokesman Tom Crosby raised several concerns, saying speed is a contributing factor in one-third of traffic fatalities.
