Coast Guard Continues Searching For Missing Sailboat

Coast Guard helicopters are still searching the coast for a missing sailboat, one day after nine people were rescued from the stormy seas.

Officials believe the four people on board the missing sailboat were traveling from Saint Thomas in the U-S. Virgin Islands, to Annapolis, Maryland.

Crews have traveled more than 54-hundred nautical miles since Monday searching for the boat. The Coast Guard says the boat may have returned to port and turned off its distress signal.

The Coast Guard rescued nine people from three boats Monday, including three people on a makeshift life raft in 34-foot seas about 160 miles east of Cape Hatteras.

Forecasters with the National Weather Service are warning sailors that a low pressure system drifting off the southeast U-S coast would continue to create rough seas.
