SWAT Weapons Taken From Police Van During Team Trip

Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison says itwas just dumb luck that thieves found a van used by members of his SWAT team parked outside a barbecue restaurant.

Eight weapons and ammunition were stolen from the locked police van.

Police in Memphis, Tennessee, recovered a fully automatic assault rifle and some ammunition on Wednesday. One man is in custody and several others have been questioned.

Sheriff's department spokeswoman Phyllis Stephens says the theft occurred Monday as the Wake County deputies were traveling to the
World SWAT Challenge in Little Rock, Arkansas. Thieves took three
assault rifles, three shotguns, two semiautomatic handguns and two
bags of personal belongings.

Stephens says the van was locked.

Harrison says the deputies didn't appear to violate policy, but there will be a review of the incident.
