Wildfires Across The State

Wildfires are keeping firefighters busy
at both ends of the state.
Teresa Odom of the North Carolina Division of Forest Resources
says firefighters have contained a Pender County blaze and are
monitoring hot spots that could flare up because of the dry weather
conditions.
Odom says a C-L-215 scooper airplane that can skim lakes, open
water or reservoirs to fill its 1,275-gallon tanks dumped
water on the fire, as did a federal air tanker. The fire affected
approximately 1100 acres.
A 40-acre wildfire burned in the Big Creek area of the Great
Smoky Mountains National Park. The blaze started Monday and forced
officials to close park facilities near Waterville, in the far
western corner of the state.
Firefighters also battled a large woods fire in Cherokee County
that destroyed one home and closed part of Highway 64 in Murphy.
