Seven volunteer fire departments in Carteret County failed their state inspections this past month and now have a year to fix any problems or face possible closure.
The Carteret County stations in jeopardy are Indian Beach-Salter Path, Mill Creek, North River, Sea Level, South River, Stacy and Stella.
The state says the departments did not meet minimum requirements.
The Carteret County Fire Marshal says the departments failed to meet the requirements mainly because of problems with staffing, paperwork, and outdated equipment.
If the stations fail after the follow up inspection- the area they serve would have no fire protection.
