It's Election Day 2009, and several cities and towns in Eastern Carolina have a reason to go to the polls.
In Kinston a voting machine problem in the morning is keeping polls at one precinct open past 7:30 p.m. Voters in Kinston precinct 4, which is at Northwest Elementary School, can vote until 8:15 p.m.
Many cities have municipal elections, including Greenville, where Mayor Pat Dunn is being challenged by Minnie Johnson-Anderson. New Bern has a mayoral runoff Tuesday, between incumbent Tom Bayliss and attorney Lee Bettis.
In Jacksonville, three council members who voted to fire the city manager are seeing competition, including from one former councilman who lost two years ago. Kinston will elect a new mayor Tuesday night as long time Mayor Buddy Ritch decided not to seek another term.
Many more towns have races for local leaders. A handful will have liquor by the drink referendums. Those include Bertie County, Newport in Carteret County, La Grange in Lenoir County, and Washington County.
Several towns have very little interest in the municipal elections. In fact, no one is on the ballot for mayor or town commissioner in the Wayne County town of Eureka. In the Martin County town of Jamesville, and in the Duplin County town of Calypso no one is running for mayor. Those races will be decided by write-in votes.

WITN will have complete Election Day 2009 coverage on WITN-TV and witn.com.
