Pet Food Recall Expanded

That massive pet food recall is being expanded to include “Hills Prescription Diet” brand of dry cat food. The F.D.A. says, since the recall started earlier this month, it has gotten more than 8,000 complaints of pet food sickening or even killing dogs and cats. Hills Pet Nutrition announced late Friday it was recalling its “Prescription Diet” brand dry cat food, which is only available in veterinarians offices. Hills says that product used the same suspect wheat gluten used in the wet food recalled earlier this month. FDA testing found that wheat gluten was tainted with melamine, a chemical used to make plastics and as fertilizer in Asia.

The FDA did not find rat poisoning as some suspected earlier, but admits it is still investigating.
