Officials in Waxhaw say the fire that killed an elderly woman Tuesday afternoon apparently started in the kitchen of her home.
The fire began about 1:30 p-m.
Officials have not released the identity of the victim, but neighbors say the woman was in her early 80s.
She was alone inside the home when the fire started. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze at the house, which is a short distance from Waxhaw's central business district, but the woman apparently was overcome by the smoke.
