A school administrator chosen by
Mecklenburg County Democrats to take the House seat formerly held
by Jim Black has been confirmed by Governor Easley.
Tricia Cotham was sworn in during the House session Thursday
afternoon. She is the youngest lawmaker in the General Assembly.
Cotham, an assistant principal at East Mecklenburg High School,
received 23 of 32 votes in a special election held by party
officials in House District 100.
Black won re-election last fall by only 30 votes as his opponent
focused on the speaker's legal troubles and ethics questions
related to campaign fundraising. Black resigned from his House seat
in February, shortly before making plea agreements to federal and
state corruption charges.
Cotham says she hopes to keep her school job while serving in
the House, which the school system generally allows.
