The reported home invasion and rape of an elderly woman in Kinston over the weekend has senior citizens on high alert.
However, it's also prompting them, law enforcement officials, and those who work with the elderly, to take a look at ways to stay safe.
Advocates suggest senior citizens always travel in groups and to wear lifeline devices to better protect themselves from danger.
Executive Director Leigh Abel of the Lenoir County Council on Aging says, "If there should be any sort of emergency you press the button on the necklace and the appropriate emergency officials will find out what's going on".
The suspect in Sunday's incident, 38-year-old Tony Pernell Rouse of Kinston, was quickly arrested. The victim was treated and released from the hospital.
