37 Clerks Cited For Selling Tobacco Products to Minors

On Thursday, we told you about the state's Red Flag Initiative to curb underage smoking. Its designed to educate retailers to look at the driver licenses of those who try to purchase tobacco products.
Eight NC Alcohol law enforcement agents last month checked 157 retail establishments in Brunswick, Columbus, Duplin, New Hanover, Onslow And Pender Counties and cited 37 store clerks for underage tobacco sales. Selling tobacco to an underage person can cost the violator up to $1,000. A store clerk can determine if a customer is of legal age by the color codes on a person's driver's license. A red border means the bearer is less than 18 years old.
