Wreck Thought To Be Blackbeard's Ship Could Be Fully Excavated

A shipwreck off the North Carolina coast believed to be the pirate Blackbeard's could be fully excavated in three years.

That's the word from a team of archaeologists and historians who've been excavating and studying the site off Atlantic Beach since it was discovered in 1996.

So far, about 15 percent of the shipwreck has been recovered. Cannons, jewelry, dishes and other artifacts are preserved and studied at a lab at East Carolina University.

Researchers shared some of their findings at the North Carolina Museum of History.

The ship, which sank in 1718, is the oldest shipwreck discovered off the North Carolina coast.
