The country's first town founded by freed black slaves, Princeville in Edgecombe County, celebrated its 122nd birthday Tuesday. But the celebration was more than just candles and cake. The town celebrated its rich history by looking ahead to the future. The theme of this year's birthday festivities focused on youth and health issues. Community leaders, both law enforcement governmental and faith based, gathered at the town hall to discuss the presence of gangs in the area and crimes committed by teens. The town will continue its celebration until Thursday. Princeville was established on February 20, 1885.
