Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards is pushing Congress to cut funding to force a withdrawal of troops from Iraq.
The former North Carolina senator had previously called for Congress to withold money to stop President Bush's plan to send more troops to Iraq.
The new Edwards plan would force an immediate withdrawal by capping funding for troop strength at 100-thousand and by requiring withdrawal of all troops over the next 12 to 18 months.
Edwards says the United States cannot fix the problems in Iraq with military power. He is asking parties in Iraq to take responsibility for their future. He says by leaving Iraq, regional powers and the entire nternational community would have to engage in the search for a political solution to create a stable Iraq.
