Senate Panel To Examine State's Economic Incentives

A powerful legislative committee is expected to begin a review this week of the state's use of business incentives. The move follows news that Google's plan to build a data center in Caldwell County could cost the public up to 260 million dollars.

Senate leader Marc Basnight says he wants the Senate Finance Committee to examine successes and failures in the state's economic recruiting. Much of the state's recruiting involves offering a company tax breaks or grants to locate or stay in the state.

Basnight says incentives should bring a benefit to the state and there should be a greater return than the amount of the package.

Google announced last month it would build a 600 million dollar data center near Lenoir and create as many as 210 jobs after getting a large incentive package.
