Teachers Can Play A Big Part In Keeping Kids In School

Over 22,000 across North Carolina dropped out of high school last year, up slightly from the 2004-2005 school year when over 20,000 dropouts were recorded. Although the statewide dropout rate increased, some school districts in the east, like Beaufort County, saw a decrease. When faced with the decision whether to stay in school or not, what makes a student stay to graduate? In former Washington High School student Arron Dunlop's case, the answer was a teacher that just wouldn't give up on him. After seriously considering dropping out, Arron graduated high school and is now a full-time paid mentor at Northeastern Elementary in Beaufort County.
