Mock Town In Dare County Erected For Target Practice

There's not a resident or tourist in sight.

The million-dollar city built out of empty steel cargo containers serves only as target practice.

The 46,000 acre facility provides practice for pilots who will be fighting over urban terrain.

The town's official name is MOUT, short for Military Operations in Urban Terrain. It's primarily used by pilots from Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro.

The mock town allows the pilots to get used to what they'll see in battle.

A military spokesman says the urban landscape one of the greatest improvements to the range since it was cleared for bombing practice in the early 1960s.
