Black Won't Run Again

Former House Speaker Jim Black says he
won't seek re-election to his Mecklenburg County seat in 2008.
Black has been dogged by legal and ethical questions over the
past year that prompted him not to run for a record fifth term as
speaker. He says he won't return to the General Assembly after next
year regardless of the outcome of federal and state investigations
into his campaign finances.
Black nearly lost the seat in last fall's election. His outside
troubles were the focus of the campaign of his Republican
challenger in their 100th House District race. Black defeated Hal
Jordan in November by less than 1 percent of the vote.
Black and new Speaker Joe Hackney say they're still discussing
what Black's responsibilities will be for the upcoming two-year
session.
