Two years ago, North Carolina Democrats elected Jerry Meek to lead the party despite objections from some major party players. But after a successful midterm election, Meek seems to have won over his critics. Meek was unanimously re-elected today as party leader during a meeting of the Democratic Executive Committee.

Also today, the committee unanimously adopted a resolution that
apologizes for the party's role in the Wilmington race riots more
than 100 years ago. The apology comes eight months after a state-appointed commission concluded that the insurrection drove hundreds of black residents from Wilmington and killed dozens more in 1898.
The riot was instigated by white supremacists affiliated with
the Democratic Party. The commission says it is the only recorded coup d'etat in U.S. history.
