The NAACP is monitoring the investigations to ensure that racism did not play a role in the arson. A lawyer for the association visited Greenville Friday as a task force continued to investigate the cause and origin of the fires. Authorities determined Thursday that the fires were intentionally set. The Memorial Baptist Church lost nearly half of its facility and suffered more than one million dollars in damage due to an early-morning blaze on January 13th. A second fire started an hour later at the nearby Unity Free Will Baptist Church and caused about 40 thousand dollars in damage. A third church, located about a mile away, also reported a break-in.
