Clearing Up Confusion Over Property Owned By Governor Easley

We've cleared up some confusion about a piece of property Governor Mike Easley owns in Carteret County. We've been following the story all week of the new tax evaluations and how property appraisals are skyrocketing. Easley's lot is in the Cannonsgate subdivision on Bogue Sound. The lot, which he and his wife bought in 2005 for $550,000, was said to be valued currently at $1.2 million. But the Governor's office said Thursday the only notice Easley has received valued the property at $730,000. Well, it turns out a new notice is in the mail to the Governor. The Carteret County tax office tells us the lot was misclassified at first, as a marina lot but it's actually a sound front lot. That means the appraisal is indeed nearly $1.2 million.
