You're a Tar Heel born and a Tar Heel bred, and when you die, there's a place your ashes can be spread.
Duke University and U-N-C Chapel Hill have joined the ranks of schools that allow people to spread cremated remains in designated sites, such as gardens or parks.
People with strong ties to U-N-C can opt to have their ashes spread in Memorial Grove for 300 dollars. The wooded area was established after the nearby Old Chapel Hill Cemetery ran out of room.
It will cost a lot more for Duke backers. Scattering ashes at Duke's new Memorial Garden costs 25-thousand dollars. It's part of a fundraising campaign to build a 10 million dollar endowment to pay for paths, walls and special plots at the Sarah Duke Gardens.
