NC Responds To Bush Plan For Additional Iraq Troops

North Carolina's congressional delegation is largely opposed to president Bush's new plan to increase the number of U-S troops in Iraq.

Two North Carolina Republicans joined with Democrats in rejecting the strategy.

Republican representative Walter Jones says the plan puts more troops in harms way in what he calls a civil war. Jones is a member of the House Armed Services Committee, and his district includes Camp Lejeune and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.

Jones sent a letter to President Bush yesterday asking him to reject the troop surge. North Carolina G-O-P representative Howard Coble also signed the letter.

Other North Carolina Republicans, including Senator Richard Burr, say they support the plan because it is important to defeat the insurgency.
