DIsbarred NC Judge To Resign Next Week, Attorney Says

A district court judge who continued to earn his six-digit salary despite losing his law license has decided that he will resign.

The attorney for James Ethridge says the judge will officially step down on Tuesday. Ethridge lost his law license in October after the State Bar determined he had deceived a senile woman and taken her home and life savings in 2001.

Though he can't hear any cases, Ethridge has remained on the state payroll. He was paid more than 25,000 dollars in salary for work he couldn't do, and officials spent thousands of dollars hiring substitute judges.

Ethridge was elected to the bench in 2004. His position heard criminal, domestic and child custody disputes in Johnston, Harnett and Lee counties in central North Carolina.
