A former Cumberland County deputy clerk of court will serve more than five years in prison for embezzling at least 90-thousand dollars during her job as a cashier.
LaToya Shenell Johnson says she stole the money to pay for medicine, therapy and daycare for her son.
But prosecutors dispute that account, arguing that the 24-year-old used the money she stole for some luxuries. They say she spent the cash on two cruises, a lavish wedding, fancy clothes and high-dollar manicures. Prosecutors say Johnson repeatedly falsified payment records and pocketed cash as drivers came in to pay their traffic tickets.
A Superior Court judge sentenced the woman to serve between 64 and 80 months in prison.
