For the first time in almost six years, North Carolina is Number 1 in The Associated Press’ college basketball poll.
The Tar Heels moved into the top spot today after three weeks at Number 2 following UCLA’s loss at Oregon last weekend. North Carolina clinched it last night with an 84-58 victory over Florida State.
North Carolina received 64 first-place votes and 1788 points from the 72-member national media panel to easily outdistance Number 2 Florida, which had three Number 1 votes and 1682 points in moving up one spot from last week. The Gators were Number 1 in the pre-season poll and for the first two weeks of the regular season.
This is North Carolina’s 82nd poll with a Number 1 ranking, fourth on the all-time list behind UCLA, Duke and Kentucky.
