House Democrats are preparing to meet Wednesday to choose their
successor to embattled outgoing Speaker Jim Black. All the
candidates insist they are on the road to victory even though no
one had claimed a majority of the 68 Democratic votes as of late
Black's decision last month not to seek a fifth term as speaker
following a year of ethical and legal problems blew wide open an
already interesting race to lead the 120-member chamber.
