North Carolina now requires recreational saltwater fishermen to buy a license, but those who don't have one won't have to sweat it for a while.
Nancy Fish of the state Division of Marine Fisheries says state regulators will remind recreational fishermen that the license is required for fishing along the shore and in the state's tidal rivers and sounds.
No date has been set for issuing the tickets.
The law establishing the license was approved in 2005 and there were estimates that as many as 15 million licenses would be sold. Officials believe that number is high, but Fish says heavy sales are expected.
Fish says licenses couldn't be sold early because the state Wildlife Resources Commission wasn't able to set up its computer system in time for early sales. The first licenses were sold Monday.
